Here's a small art post for the weekend. I'm working on an idea that involves a character from another original painting I did some months ago. The below is more of a study. I'll be experimenting with palettes and balance and doing more study paintings. Then I'd like to do a larger final painting. It involves the themes of human evolution, spirit and motherhood/childhood.

The other afternoon, Jaz awoke and told me he had dust in his dreams. "Dust?", I asked. "Yes! Dream dust!". How these beautiful ideas and images are trapped in a little one's mind will always surprise me. These thoughts and others inspire a whole host of images in my own adult mind... tho I'm sure they can't compare. Sometimes they make it into the sketchpad and others in ink and paint.

This new painting is called "Hither and thither". Watercolor, ink and pastel, approx. 24"x18"

The process is always such a journey and I honestly haven't a clue where I will end up, so I don't bother with predictions. Am I talking about real life too? You guessed it. Yup. I made at least five sketches, then painted this scene four times. I think my ideas have finally come to rest in this one. Here are snippets of that process:

By the way, it's a surprise to me, but it turns out there is a possibility I may be doing a show of my artwork with another artist in a few months if I can be ready by that time. I'm just a little excited to even have a possibility of that happening. It's only in the talking stage at this point... but we shall see.

continuing my exploration with pastel and watercolor, specifically values.

our family took a day-trip along I-17. along the way, i couldn't resist doing some quick gesture drawings. if you've ever been in the arizona desert pre-spring, then you know just how lovely it is. the smell of creosote and sage are like nothing else. it is where i grew up and it is always a fond feeling to be back there. i remember my husband's aunt shared her thoughts about the desert with us a long time ago - it is inviting to look at, but once one enters its boundaries, he finds how stark, prickley and rugged a place it truly is. it doesn't allow one into itself easily, so respect it and walk carefully.

the drive was a great time for the little guys to bond and chitter-chatter, and also so nice for my husband and i to enjoy some adult conversation. something about talking while traveling is always so clarifying. helps shake off the cobwebs.
