hey kid, yeah you
I am right here in my kitchen, windows open and blowing in the sounds of the willow branches brushing the house and the crows cawing on the telephone line. My son is tracing some shapes and a long recording of songs by Mr. Rogers (given to me by my in-law mom and dad) is playing via the iPod. "Tree, tree, tree... we love you... tree, tree, tree...." What is it about just listening to the radio show or a cd story (without a book) that is so different? It is that the imagination is free to run away with images and colors and characters. Not all the blanks are filled in.
Was very happy to see the theme for Illustration Friday: Hollow. Like a hidden hollow in a forest, or a hollow space or... whatever can be imagined. Here is my thought on that:
A sketch of some mystery. I don't know what it is.
And a snippet of an idea that will later, hopefully, be a painting. It is a sort of reoccurring theme. I'm sure you can guess why.
Something what puzzles and frustrates me is someone's assumptions of what life with children should be, especially when they espouse these feeling very loudly - when they don't have any children to actually live out those ideologies!! What is that about? It's the difference between theory and real life. And it's just bad form. Seriously... peeve, peeve. On a similar note, I was asked about Giselle Institute's Child Behavior. It is good stuff and an older classic. Tho I would avoid the personality typecasting chapter, the rest is very helpful in seeing developmental benchmarks and stages in general. And, well, very good for relaxing the mind and reminding parents that their kids are, after all, kids. I'd like to recommend this to people without kids too! And, rabbit trail, I recently saw Horton Hears a Who with Jas and Lucas, and we just loved it so much. The Dr. Seuss book come to cinema is the perfect movie for all ages, even two years old. This is really a movie made with kids in mind, even old ones like me. ;) And it avoids all that yucky jaded commercial ick that some producers are selling to our youngest generation. This is a smart, kind and funny movie.
Lastly, I am soooo excited. My son will be a preschooler and will be attending the local Waldorf-inspired school. A new adventure....
Okay. I'm outta here! Got some cooking to do.
xo,
C
